Our Goals
We train to master the principles of the basic techniques and forms of traditional Shotokan Karate. The addition of jutsu allows us to apply these principles to our study of the forms (kata) by means of the five levels of applications against attacks. These five levels are:
  • Throwing
  • Ground fighting
  • Strangling and choking
  • Joint and limb locks
  • Striking and pressure points techniques
The sensei (chief instructor) here at Shotokan Karatejutsu is Joe Scheid. Mr. Scheid has over twenty years of training and teaching experience. He was also instructed and successfully tested under Shihan Osamu Ozawa, the most senior black belt in Shotokan Karate in the western hemisphere. Mr. Scheid has also competed at an international level and has trained with some of the most respected traditional karate instructors in the world. He is currently a fourth degree black belt and continues his schooling with sensei Sal Lopresti, a sixth degree black belt at Shotokan Karatejutsu Academy. His training also includes work with Kyoshi Patrick McCarthy of Koryu-Uchinadi. Mr. Scheid has also tested under Sensei Edmond Otis, chairman and chief instructor of the American Japan Karate Association.
